NYC: Come Watch Some of Richard Kern’s Films Tonight

You might recognize Richard Kern primarily as the guy who takes all those terrific portraits of sometimes-not-fully-clothed girls that we’ve featured in VICE over the years. If that’s all you know him for, get educated dummy, because Richard was one of the most trangressive and best filmmakers in New York City’s No Wave scene, which was this thing that happened in Manhattan where people like Jim Jarmusch and Amos Poe made very strange movies for no money and—look, just Google it if you don’t know about it, OK? The important thing is that if you live in New York, you can go to a free screening of Richard’s films tonight. Some of them, like Fingered, starring Lydia Lunch, are old; others, like Webcam Girls, are newer; there are also going to be some clips that have never been released or seen by anyone.

The films will be shown at Ramiken, a gallery on the Lower East Side, to accompany parts two and three of an installation by Bjarne Melgaard called IDEAL POLE, and the screening will start at 6 PM and run until whenever. There’s no seating, but you’ll probably want to walk around and look at Bjarne’s work anyway, and we’re told there will be free refreshments (i.e. beer) as well. Admission is free too, so you really have nothing to lose by showing up. Not sure if you’ll be into Richard’s films? Look at that photo at the top of the post. That’s what his films are like.
