This week, VICE on HBO headed to Michigan to investigate the charter school movement and took a hard look at the unfolding crisis in the Central African Republic, where at least 14 rebel groups have seized control of 75% of the country.
No choice but to choose
School choice is an education reform movement that promotes charter schools and voucher programs as alternatives to traditional public schools. One of the biggest advocates for "choice" over the past two decades, Betsy DeVos, is now serving as President Trump's secretary of education. VICE correspondent Gianna Toboni traveled to DeVos' home state of Michigan to see school choice in action and understand what the future of public education might look like.
VICE correspondent Ben Anderson covers the rarely reported crisis in the Central African Republic, where 2.5 million people, or about half the country, rely on humanitarian aid for survival. What was once a war between Christians and Muslims there has descended into a chaotic and brutal battle for the country’s many natural resources, which has devastated its residents.
