Erdoğan’s Security Guards Were Just Indicted for DC Melee

The charges were welcome news to US officials and diplomats on both sides of the aisle who expressed outrage over the violent clash in May.

Nineteen people—including 15 Turkish security officials—were indicted Tuesday on a variety of charges for their role in a violent clash outside the Turkish embassy in DC in May.

The defendants were charged with conspiracy to commit violence, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon of a senior citizen, aggravated assault, assault with significant bodily injury, and simple assault. The charges were all supplemented with a "bias-related hate crime" enhancement, which, under DC's hate crime laws, could increase jail time if the defendants are found guilty.
