A new study by the Salvation Army estimates New Zealand needs to build 2,000 social houses each year to keep up with demand, half of which will need to be built in Auckland. The author of the study, Alan Johnson, said social housing stock needed to increase from 82,000 to more than 100,000 in the next decade. Johnson warned of increased homelessness and worsening housing conditions if the target was not met. Unions say they are shocked by Ministry of Health documents urging DHBs not to pay mental health workers the same as aged care and disability staff. Last night Checkpoint with John Campbell released the letter which stated that any top-up payments to mental health workers would possibly breach the Public Finance Act. Platform Trust CEO Marion Blake said this was a blow to mental health workers, many of whom were leaving to work in the disability sector where they earned up to $6.00 more per hour.
