Husband of Burkina Faso Terror Victim Hangs Up on Justin Trudeau in Anger

"I hung up in his face. And it felt good,” Yves Richard told a Montreal radio station on Thursday. His wife was among six Canadians killed in the Friday assault on the capital of Burkina Faso.

Earlier this week, Justin Trudeau phoned the families of the six Canadians killed in the terror attacks in Burkina Faso last Friday to offer his condolences. But Yves Richard, whose wife died in the attacks, says he hung up on the prime minister abruptly after he couldn't stomach his political posturing.

"My prime minister called me sounding like a broken record, wishing me good luck and offering his condolences, and told me some lines about how she was the pride of Canada," Richard told a Montreal radio station on Thursday. "So then I asked him to stop his political blah blah."

"I asked him to go kiss his wife and hold his kids," he went on, "and I then I hung up in his face. And it felt good."

Richard's wife, Maude Carrier, was among the six Quebecers who traveled to Ouagadougou on a humanitarian mission to help repair orphanages and schools. Carrier was traveling with her father and his wife, their son, and two family friends. On Friday night, jihadis with al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb opened fire in a hotel and restaurant frequented by foreigners. A 12-hour siege ensued, leaving 29 people dead and dozens more injured.

Richard's interview comes just days after his wife's mother, Camille Carrier, told a Quebec City radio station she was "revolted" by the Liberal government's plans to stop Canada's bombing campaign against the Islamic State.

"I'd like for Justin Trudeau, instead of just condemning with words from his small mouth that [he do it] with his planes, he fights too," Camille, whose ex-husband was also killed in the attack, told the radio station on Monday. That same day, she railed against Trudeau on French-language television station TVA saying that he "walks around with a nice little haircut and always empty, agreed-upon formulas."

"He condemns things, but he is not even able to go to fight with the others who support the French," she added.

The day before, Trudeau gave a speech at an Ontario mosque condemning the attacks and expressing solidarity with the victims. Quebec's premier, Philippe Couillard, said the attacks should strengthen Canada's resolve to "fight these barbarians with all our strength, alongside our allies."

Cameron Ahmad, a spokesperson for Trudeau, confirmed to VICE News that he made phone calls to the victims' families on Monday, but wouldn't say whether Richard hung up on him.

"It was important for the prime minister to personally offer his condolences to the families of the victims of the horrific terrorist attack in Ouagadougou," Ahmad wrote in an email.
