NORTHMIX: Matt FX

You can thank this musical know-it-all for the eclectic sounds of Skins and Broad City.

If you've ever started scrambling to open Shazam midway through an episode of Skins or Broad City, then you've successfully been caught in Matt FX's musical web.

Designing the soundtracks for a generation of young, slightly directionless, television urbanites is Matt FX's full time job. At 19-years-old, Matt was hired as the music supervisor for Skins (both UK and US, for those Skins snobs) making him one of the youngest music supervisors for a television show, ever. His ability to weed out lesser known artists from the Internet's vast music pages has boosted their sales to over 200 percent.

Jump a couple years forward and Matt FX is working on the second season of Comedy Central's Broad City―it's the eccentric tale of two deeply cynical girls, who are fighting to sustain life and male attention in New York City. He archives his soundtracks on a YouTube channel for the show and explains some of the artists and the reasons for his choices. One episode of Broad City consists only of tracks by producer RJD2―some of which have been specifically made for the show and are practically untraceable.

But his musical knowledge stems far beyond television. As a multi-instrumentalist, the founder of the TRIBES NY party series, and a staple DJ in the local NYC scene, it's obvious that Matt is a man of many trades. He is currently working on a musical side project called Scooter Island―a collaborative project that combines over 20 producers, vocalists and visual artists. Together, they are shaping a 40 minute, 12 track compilation.

His smooth, genre-defying sounds effortlessly light up screens, soundtracks and dance floors―which makes him a perfect candidate for this installment of Northmix.

"Seeing as it's the year's end, it felt appropriate for me to put together a mix that consists of my favourite tunes to play out in 2014," he said. "Some of these are older gems and some newer heaters, but they've all served me well!"
