Airdbird & Napolian's New Single Will Take You Back to Indie Dance's Golden Era

Get ready for a nostalgia trip back to the mid-2000s.

For some of us, our taste for dance music was sparked by '00s four-on-the-floor indie rock. Exemplary work of this era includes The Killers' first album Hot Fuss, The Bravery, The Faint, Le Tigre, Moving Units, and The Gossip. Even certain Interpol moments fit the bill. While lots of that stuff isn't held in high regard (or even mentioned) now, that doesn't mean it isn't actually pretty good. In fact, we're so into this new Airbird & Napolian single, "POWEr," because it takes us right back to the indie dance glory days. It even sounds like something that could fit in International DeeJay Gigolo Records boss DJ Hell's 2005 BBC Essential Mix, a weirdly fascinating document of rock sounds initially making their way into club tracks.

For some backstory, Airbird is Joel Ford (who worked with Oneohtrix Point Never as Ford and Lopatin), and Napolian is signed to 0PN's label, Software. What we've got here is the final single off their forthcoming debut album together, titled Mr. Foolish. Ford gave THUMP some backstory for the track via email: "I walked into Rockaway Records before one of our LA sessions and bought a stack of funk, new age, and 80s pop rock used CDs. We sampled the shit out of Yanni, Def Leppard, and some other bargain bin stuff. I can't even remember what we sampled for 'POWEr' but there's something wild going down inside." Give the track a spin below, and be sure to snag the record when it's out November 13 on Cascine.
