Senator Allegedly Had Public Pay for Hotels Where He Had Sexual Relationship With Teen: Report

The Senate is working on booting Don Meredith out.

The alleged improprieties conducted by a disgraced senator now extend to using publicly paid for hotel rooms to have a sexual tryst with a minor.

As first reported by the Toronto Star, Senator Don Meredith utilized hotel rooms and a cell phone that were expensed by the parliamentary body to further his relationship with the underaged woman.

Meredith allegedly had the woman to his hotel room at the Chateau Laurier and also texted the woman from his senate cellphone instead of his personal one. Meredith is an out of town senator so he was given an allowance for housing and travel.

The senator has sat for the last six years after being appointed in 2011 by then prime minister Stephen Harper. The actions of the senator first came to light after another Toronto Star investigation which prompted a Senate ethics committee investigation. In the investigation the committee found that Meredith, using his power as a senator, allegedly initiated a sexual relationship with a minor which became physical in 2013.

The now 52-year-old senator allegedly started the relationship with the then 16 year old and allegedly had sex with her three times (once while she was 17.) While the senator admits a relationship took place, he actively denies the claims that she was underage when the intercourse occurred. In an interview with the Canadian Press, Meredith apologized and said that "this was a violation, a moral failing on my part."

"As a human being, I made a grave error in judgment, in my interactions," he said. "For that I am deeply sorry."

The Senate is actively working to oust Meredith. This week Meredith appeared in front of the ethics committee but has made no indication that he will be leaving his post as a result of the allegations. In the meantime, Meredith remains a senator and pulls in around $140,000.

If Meredith is expelled it would be the first time in the history the Senate.
