Sam Herring, frontman of Baltimore synthpop trio Future Islands, crafts songs with one intention and one intention alone: “I want you to cry. I want you to feel the way I feel. I want to crush.” Well, HERRING SMASH with Future Islands’ latest release, On the Water.

The band’s third studio release is decidedly more toned-down and maudlin than their previous dance-happy crowdpleasers, but the album still heavily delivers on the “musical glitter glue”: sparkling, infectious tracks that stick to you.
