Many people write music for the fame, the fortune, and (mostly) the babez. Sam Herring, frontman of Baltimore synthpop trio Future Islands, crafts songs with one intention and one intention alone: “I want you to cry. I want you to feel the way I feel. I want to crush.” Well, HERRING SMASH with Future Islands’ latest release, On the Water.
The band’s third studio release is decidedly more toned-down and maudlin than their previous dance-happy crowdpleasers, but the album still heavily delivers on the “musical glitter glue”: sparkling, infectious tracks that stick to you.
