Artist Makes Sculptures Using Human Skulls, Taxidermy & Crystals

In a time where a faith in science continues to become the norm, where internet is god and wifi our sacred connection to the lord and server, some of us are still grappling with a more spiritual understanding of existence. Kyle Montgomery is an assistant curator and resident artist at Sydney’s China Heights Gallery. His use of religious iconography, crystals, taxidermy and skulls awakens something inside of us that often lies dormant. The work is not an expression of a particular conviction, nor a definitive question, but rather a display of broad, openminded and unrestricted wondering. The ambiguity of meaning in Kyle’s work spurs a questioning in his viewers, a search for something solid. That concrete answer is never provided through the art (or the interview), and it is perhaps this which gives his art such an inexplicable draw and power. We spoke with Kyle about his beliefs, and how on earth you get your hands on a human skull.

The Creators Project: Religious iconography is a prevalent in your work, particularly imagery of Mary. Any particular reason why?

Kyle Montgomery: In our culture these are the images used to enforce rules and social order, also enticing you to come to the next dimension. Owning them and worshiping them links you with every other person that does the same.

Are you, or were you, religious?

I believe in something.

Crystal Mary (2015)

Mary is of course a figure of purity and probably the most easily recognised figure of Christainity and you’re pairing her image with crystals, often associated with more eastern belief systems. Is this symbolic paring of belief systems intentional?

They are a portal of power and magic that links you to other dimensions and other places only the mind and spirit can visit.

How long does it take to complete a crystal Mary?

It ranges from a couple of days to years.

Where do you get the animals for your taxidermic works?

Some from the highways. Some from my local vet. Some are preloved and forgotten about.

Why do you use animals?

It’s more about the death of the animals, the transcending to the next level and turning back into this earth and minerals.

For me, much of your work carries themes of death and the afterlife. Have you got any ideas about what happens after we play our last hand?

I have a few ideas but I am still learning and exploring other ideas.

How did you get the human skull used in your ‘Crystal Skyll’ work? 

It presented itself to me just like a one of the thirteen crystal skulls would.

And how much is it? I would like to purchase it.

It now belongs to its rightful owner, Reko Rennie.
