is a beautifully shot documentary about a boy named Billy (duh) who is every weird kid who ever sat by himself in your high school lunchroom. He's got the heavy metal tees, the shorts, and the sandals that scream "awkward teen loner!" as he moseys down the street, knobby-kneed and talking an endless stream of whatever pops into his head. He's the kind of boy who would say something to you that really skeeved you out but who you'd also think was maybe secretly a genius. The film follows Billy wandering around a small town in Maine—in the woods, in his home, in school, and at the local restaurant where he awkwardly, painfully hits on a girl with weird eyes that go back and forth. He has what they call a "troubled past" and other assorted problems, but the film doesn't dwell too much on that or make any judgments—we just get to see his world for a bit. Some parts are hard to watch without wincing (anyone who went to high school who isn't a jerk can relate), and it does get pretty dark in that head of his, but you keep rooting for him and hoping that he doesn't end up gunning down his whole town. Cross your fingers. The film, directed by Jennifer Venditti, opens in New York at the IFC Center on December 5th. Get tickets and more info here: http://www.billythekiddocumentary.com/
