PHOTO ISSUE EXTRA - PETER SUTHERLAND'S SUPER DISTANCED META-INTERPRETATION OF "FIVE PHOTOS"

We've been seeing a lot of Peter Sutherland in these parts lately, with all the Toxic: Imperial Valley stuff on VBS and all the follow-up on the VBS blog and then in the Photo Issue, and right now with this blog post. Maybe we should just rename Viceland Peter Sutherlandland? Would that make everyone happy? We asked him if he'd explain the five photos we ran in the issue, a spread of love and happiness that is eloquently and succinctly entitled "Five Photos," and here is what he said.

All are friends or loved ones. All were taken during the last two years on what I loosely refer to as my hippie adventures (road trips) with the exception of the shot of my brother (Humpty) and mom, which was shot in the house I grew up in. Jesse, the editor of

helped choose these. As I mentioned they are road-trip photos, but I realize now that they might represent the suburban experience from the perspective of a young boy. The guy in the tree is actually on a rope swing, swinging into water, which represents bathing, something I have never enjoyed but was required to do at least once a week as a kid. The shot of my mom and bro represents the family, stable, trustworthy, etc. The next shot of the long hairs is about mowing the lawn, the staple activity of the suburban existence. The shot taken inside the car could represent running errands in the minivan, the way Mom's hand falls on the contours of the steering wheel just happens to look like she's throwing up devil horns and you get psyched. The sleeping girl with the tats could represent the 16-year-old sister that is already into all kinds of crazy shit, or a far-out baby sitter.
