Illuminate the Cranium

Kenneth Anger and Brian Butler's enigmatic performance has found a wormhole from its origins to right in front of your astonished face.

The best kind of enigmatic performance has found a wormhole from its origins to right in front of your astonished face. It drops out of an etheric portal onto a stage, works its charm, then instantly vanishes or dissipates. This is the kind of razzle-dazzle of Technicolor Skull, an improvisational music and light projection collaboration between Kenneth Anger and Brian Butler. Gesture is used to conjure globs of sound and magickal elements in a this-could-happen-only-once kind of event. “A ritual is basically a performance,” says Butler. “You are sort of capturing the attention or bringing the audience with you to a certain place of consciousness, exploring with them a very abstract realm beyond what words can communicate.”

Technicolor Skull performs as the opening reception for Kenneth Anger: ICONS, a master showcase of his work from 1947 onward, projected and displayed in a custom gallery made of red vinyl. Along with this performance comes the release of Technicolor Skull’s one-sided red vinyl LP.

The show’s on now through February 27; the Technicolor Skull performance is this Saturday, November 19 at 8 PM.
