An alleged assault against a family of three police say may have been “racially motivated” was caught on video Thursday.
One of the apparent victims filmed a man yelling and swinging a bat in a mall parking lot and posted the video to Twitter. “We were victims of a hate crime in St Thomas Ontario,” the tweet read. “A guy got mad, because we were talking in Spanish.” The woman who posted the tweet claimed that the attacker was about to hit her 13-year-old son when her husband intervened.
“You better get the fuck out of here,” the alleged attacker, a white man with a beard brandishing a neon yellow-coloured bat, says to the person filming the video. “Terrorists! Terrorists! Terrorists!” the man continues, pointing and shouting at the top of his lungs.
The incident occurred at Elgin Mall in St. Thomas, which has a population of just under 39,000 and is predominantly white. The town is located nearby London, Ontario.
“Stay away from me,” someone from behind the camera says to the man with the bat.
“We got terrorists… ISIS, ISIS, we got ISIS right here!” the alleged attacker continues to shout.
At one point in the video, the camera goes sideways and it appears someone has been hit by the attacker.
According to the London Free Press, one of the family members sustained a cracked rib and bruising from the incident.
The attacker left in a white BMW following the incident, according to police.
The suspect, who is 36 years old, was arrested the same day in a London, Ontario residence and charged with aggravated assault and three counts of assault with a weapon.
