Every sci-fi story needs a heartless, inhumane corporation to antagonize the only shreds of good that remain in the universe. There are unscrupulous private security companies like Robocop‘s OCP, completely undeterred mining firms like RDA from Avatar, and the world’s Tyrell Corps, Bladerunner’s favored producer of replicants since 2010.Of all of them, no one has anything on the most evil corporation of all fiction, the one willing to bring the universe’s most vicious creatures in direct contact with human life just to see what the hell would happen. Of course, we’re talking about the Weyland Corporation, without whom none of the thrills of the Alien series would have ever existed. These are the guys that promised Ripley that they’d end the Sulace reconnaissance mission without bringing any of the double-mouthed, spiky-tailed, acid-spitting monsters back for research. But guess what—they did!In this minifilm, Ridley Scott, legendary director of the original Alien movie, as well as the upcoming prequel Prometheus, presents Peter Weyland. Played by Guy Pearce, Weyland is depicted giving a TED talk about technology and how he wants to change the world in 2023. If only that applauding audience knew what an evil bastard this guy is.Then again, a lot of people say we’ve got evil corporations running the world right now, so maybe science fiction is soon to become science fact! Hate that expression? Us too!
