So this is great. Throughout Western Europe, people ritualistically pace around poles while clutching strands of fabric. In small pockets of Mexico, people climb up even taller poles, jump off said poles, and then spin around in lazy circles, all while upside down. It's known as Danza de los Voladores, or Dance of the Flyers. The custom is believed to have taken root some 450 years ago in central Mexico among various tribes, before it spead throughout the rest of Mesoamerica. It's quite a sight: five men, or Pole Flyers, scale a 30-meter pole before four of them hurl themselves off, descending to the ground. A few years ago, UNESCO named it an Intangible Cultural Heritage. And in 2013, it's a simple matter of strapping a GoPro to give you, desk jockies of the world, a feel for a tradition that puts your sharade-y holiday customs to utter shame.Anyways, the good (potentially pukey) stuff starts around 2:17.@thebanderson
