To spy on the landscape of his hometown of Delft for a new exhibition, photographer Gerco de Ruijter sent a pigeon aloft with a small video camera attached to its body. For the exhibit he asked Michel Banabila to compose the film’s music, which depicts the pigeon’s aerial view as it follows the A13 highway towards Rotterdam.

As Geoff Manugh points out, the use of an animal as an instrument of surveillance echoes not only Sam Easterson’s extensive collection of farm animal POV camera footage, but also the use of small robotic airplanes by the military to spy on enemy positions. It’s also an interesting riposte to the peculiar phenomenon of animal webcams: rather than looking at animals, maybe we could use more animals looking for us.
