The last time a new pope got anointed was in 2005, before iPhones. Before mobile Facebook and Twitter apps. What did the pilgrims say then, and to whom? What would they have tweeted? How would we know they were even really there, if NBC had not captured them in this photograph?NBC's split image, above, of St. Peter's Square then and now is going properly viral, with over 55,000 Facebook shares as of this writing. By the time this post goes live, it will be many more. The awe must be part "the times they are a-changing" and part "wow, hey, even pope-watching has gone digital." A tradition that is thousands of years old being experienced through Apple products that were built last year and will probably break the next. The inauguration of a new pope now closely resembles a Lady Gaga concert, and surely the moment is notable, and shareable.
