Bellflower is true indie dream – a messy and charming buddy movie made by a group of friends for a pittance and quickly gobbled up for distribution after its debut at Sundance this year.

But it’s also a deranged apocalyptic nightmare, parts mumblecore and maker movement, that synthesizes Bottle Rocket into a dirty nuke by way of Mad Max and The Doom Generation, with plenty of flames thrown in for good measure.

Evan Glodell, the disturbingly talented, greasy-haired and good-natured auteur who wrote, directed, and stars in the film, didn’t just help build the movie’s flamethrower and its incredible car. He hacked his beta-tester SI-2K digital camera with vintage parts, bellows and Russian lenses to give the movie its distinctively charred look.
