It seems like college sports teams are hiding a bunch of skeletons in emails nowadays. The Princeton swimming and diving team is the latest to be suspended after a trove of emails was found, in which members of the team referred to the women's swimming and diving team in what the school describes as "misogynistic and racist" terms, according to a statement from the University."We make clear to all of our student-athletes that they represent Princeton University at all times, on and off the playing surface and in and out of season, and we expect appropriate, respectful conduct from them at all times," Princeton director of athletics Mollie MarcouxSamaan said in the statement. "The behavior that we have learned about is simply unacceptable. It is antithetical to the values of our athletic program and of the University, and will not be tolerated."After reviewing the situation with Coach Orr, we have decided to suspend the season, and all associated team activities, effective immediately," Samaan added. "In the coming days we will make a determination about the status of the team's remaining schedule and we also will work collaboratively to determine additional actions aimed at education and positive culture building for the team."Princeton's swimming and diving team was the third Ivy League team to be punished over inappropriate conduct in the past two months, as Harvard's soccer team and Columbia's wrestling team were also discovered to have made lewd, offensive comments. Harvard's men's soccer season was canceled after the school discovered an explicit rating system of female athletes, and Columbia's wrestling team's season was suspended after team members were caught sending homophobic and racist terms via text message.All 38 members of Princeton's men's swimming and diving team were suspended after an anonymous complaint was made this week.
