UConn Loses on Fake Field Goal Interception

UConn lost to Mizzou 9-6 on an interception off a fake field goal. You play to win the game.

The barn-burningest barn burner of the day had to be No. 22 Missouri hosting UConn. Both teams almost made into double digits by the end of the game, but a botched fake field goal by UConn inside the last minute of play ensured this one ended in regulation with a final score of 9-6, Mizzou.

UConn put together a halfway decent drive in the final three minutes of the game that began on their own 33, but sputtered out by the time they got into Missouri territory. Looking at a fourth-and-five from the Mizzou 25 with 53 seconds left in the game, the Huskies decided to Herm Edwards this thing and went for a fake field goal. The decision wasn't terrible—a tie would almost certainly just delay the inevitable loss—but the execution was horrendous. Backup quarterback Tim Boyle lofted a pass over the middle that any number of Tigers could have intercepted, but it was Anthony Sherrils who picked it off and returned it 50 yards to put the game away.
