LONDON - UM TAPA NA CARA DE DEUS: MX

Arise. The Brazilian black thrash attack continues. This week's insulter of Jesus Christ is MX

The last two posts were pretty serious, but it's not all scowls in Brazilian metal, as proven by MX and their almost slapstick take on 80s black thrash. I can nearly see Benny Hill running around to the opening riff of the track below. In my opinion, this is as good as under-produced thrash gets. The opening riff is infectious, almost gangrenous. I remember when I first heard this I couldn't stop rewinding it. I loved the classic Brazilian thrash metal chorus in broken English: "We go to fuck!/ This bitch now!/ Fuck off this bitch!" Classy.

MX were one of the founders of Brazilian thrash scene that formed in 1983 and they recently got back together after their second split. This track is taken from their 1988 debut Simoniacal, which by my reckoning is as good a thrash album as there is. But unless you like latter-era thrash then don't waste your time; this, like Sarcófago and Sepultura, is the true bastard metal sound. If you can find it, check out Headthrashers Live, a live split from '87 featuring MX, Blasphemer, Cova, and Necromacia. It's amazing. The crowd reaction to MX's opener has me daydreaming of some sort of necro-Brazilian thrash version of The Beatles at Shea Stadium.
