Slavoj Žižek, the Slovenian psychoanalytical philosopher and Hegelian Marxist, received widespread criticism over his support of Donald Trump during his promotional tour for his most recent book, “Refugees, Terror and Other Troubles with the Neighbors.” Given Žižek’s far-left views, his support for the Republican presidential-elect seemed contradictory.

Mary H.K. Choi met up with Žižek to clarify his position and discuss Trump’s win.

“Hillary didn’t win because she was too much for the left…She stands much more for this interventionist, Republican tradition.” Žižek told VICE News.

He claims Hillary’s loss was necessary for the long-term survival of the Democratic party. “The inertia of status quo should somehow be broken and open space for a new political reconfiguration. I think this is the only chance for the left,” he said.
