It's fitting that their name sounds like a brand of Highland Scotch, because Walker & Royce produce some of the classiest house beats around. The NYC-based duo have been on our radar since achieving some cross-Atlantic dark house love after releasing on Damian Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels in 2012. Now they're back with a 3-track release on the freshly minted imprint from Luca Venezia (aka Drop the Lime), Safer at Night.Venezia is a busy man. In addition to running Trouble & Bass, he's put Drop the Lime on hold to progress a sound he calls "New Gotham House." It appears in his work under his Curses moniker and shines through on Safer at Night releases. The New Gotham vibe is minimal, dark, and spooky—all adjectives Walker & Royce are comfortable with. It's the kind of shit Batman listens to on the rare occasion he goes clubbing (he loves Verboten but is a total wallflower, btw). The first track on the EP, "Moonlight Regatta," is a seven minute techy voyage of restrained synth tones and deep grooves. The AA-Side, "Disappear," featuring Steven Klavier keeps the tech palate, but turns up the intensity with some bassline whompage and speed garage influences. The final track, "Iron Stan," is an atmospheric wash of blips and bloops that sounds like Hudson Mohawke's feelings.Oh, you want more?
