This Weekend, Refs in Italy's Serie B Will Give Out Green Cards for Good Behavior

It has nothing to do with immigration.

Italian soccer has always been a place of innovation: the Catenaccio, the Libero defender, Zona mista. Although Gli Azzurri have slipped to 16th in the world, the team has four World Cup titles to its name, and its spirit, its passion for the game, remains remarkable. The innovation, powered by that passion, continues.

According to Italian paper La Stampa, referees in the Italian second division are set to add another card to their back pockets. This weekend, in addition to red and yellow cards, refs will carry a green card. It has nothing to do with immigration, or even punishment. Instead, the refs will award the card to players who have done good things on the field: like not twisting an opponent's nipple when the ref has his back turned, or not pretending to have broken femurs. You know, "acts of virtue."

…and that appears to be all. There doesn't seem to be any reward or anything, no actual boost to your team's competitive advantage; the cards are not redeemable for a free small soda at Burger King or anything. Just una nota di merito. A gold star. It may not catch on, but it is thoughtful.
