Remember advent calendars? I couldn’t tell you what they were about, but I do remember tearing open all the little cardboard windows and gorging on the sickly sweet milk chocolate inside. London-based video artist David Wilson gives us a different kind of advent calendar, serving up a tasty video treat every day until Christmas. For his Alternative Advent project, Wilson repurposed footage form his archive of live visuals as well as some never-before-seen clips to create delightfully bizarre animations and music videos.
Each of the 25 new video clips is paired with a new or rare track from a stellar cast of bands and musical collaborators that includes Caribou, Crystal Antlers, Battles, Les Savy Fav, Little Boots and more.
“I started to create content for the live arena as a way of giving life to graphical ideas that may never have otherwise seen the light of day,” says Wilson. “This project's musical participants have treated their submissions in a similar way, making the calendar an opportunity to air musical phrases and experiments that never made it into fully-formed songs; an outlet for unrealised ideas.”
Since 19 of the videos have already been released, now’s as good a time as any to head over to his Tumblr page and have yourself a late afternoon binge. In the meantime, check out Wilson’s latest music video for the folk-twinged British indie band The Maccabees below and prepare to have your mind… bisected.
