We Saw This: Juiceboxxx

Juiceboxxx really went for it in an emotional way.

Tuesday night my photographer friend Kevin and I descended into the subterranean beer dungeon of Cakeshop to see Juiceboxxx perform. The first band was still setting up, so Juiceboxxx (aka JB) was sitting at the bar enjoying a cup of tea. He says he no longer drinks before shows but didn't elaborate, I can only imagine he went Kanye on some guy's ass and has since decided to keep things respectable (just kidding JB). Polite, soft-spoken, and bespectacled, he told me how he escaped his hip-house phase and now loosely calls his style "rock-rap." Extreme Animals, the first group to go on, were a favorite of his, so we headed up front to enjoy.

Extreme Animals' music was an elixir of beautifully intricate noises filtered through one hell of a mind fuck. They used an incredible video projection that, in my personal favorite moment, showed Harry Potter books being burned while they played their own twisted version of the Harry Potter film score. The following act was was Dark Sister, two white rapper chicks with a song about their pussies being red velvet cake. I guess pussy is kind of red, but to have a pussy as red as red velvet might suggest an inflammation. They were sweet girls, great beats, the sound was a bit off on their mics so I fear I didn't get to properly experience them.

JB took the stage around midnight. I admit after my brief interaction with him at the bar I was expecting more of a poetry reading than a rap show. As it turns out, dude's a fucking rap star. What was that tea you were drinking made from JB, Adam Yauch's ashes? With classic hip-hop rock the mic lyrics and the stage presence of Eminem (without the rage) he turned the cramped underground bar into a "fucking sports stadium," to quote the man himself.

Bonus points for the night: Juiceboxxx had me come on stage at one point, although I'm not quite sure why.

Points subtracted for the night: Too much PBR.
