Don't get me wrong, I love California. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, which has given me a mellow self-entitlement matched only by New Yorkers' agitated self-entitlement. Now that I've lived in both cities, I get to make sweeping statements about their inhabitants, such as I have done above. And while I was immensely happy that Obama won the election, my excitement was dimmed by California's passing of Prop 8 and San Francisco's loss of Measure K. Look, I know everyone thinks San Francisco is full of fags and whores, and, well, it is! But by passing Prop 8—which would keep gay couples from adopting easily—we've successfully denied ourselves what could have been part of a greater solution to this whole "shitty economy/white trash/overpopulation" problem we've got going on. California just took a huge step backwards into a big pile of shit.
