Viral Style: Headbands That Make You Dumber, Smartphones As Free Weights, And Post-Apocalyptic Watch Ads

Viral Style #44 brings you a future where phone accessories will get you ripped.

DIGITIZED RETAIL CONCEPT OF THE WEEK

Kenzo, everyone's favorite niche-wear line of the moment, opened a new pop-up store in Paris this week, showcasing a range of styles from their No Fish, No Nothing! Spring/Summer 2014 collection. So far, so cool—especially when taking into account the space's ocean-inspired digital features made to complement the range's sustainable fishing theme. Shoppers walked in to find a massive aquarium screen on their arrival, filled with virtual fish that disappeared at intervals to symbolize the harmful effects of overfishing—but new ones were added whenever a product was purchased, or someone posted a specially hashtagged Instagram of the store. Of course, customers were way more interested in raising environmental awareness rather than boosting their own social media presence (right)?

POST-APOCALYPTIC WATCH AD OF THE WEEK

When the end of the world arrives, don't count on your phone being there for you—a day or two without juice, and it's history. That's why Casio G-Shock have teamed up with Maharishi, to create a watch designed to endure just such an eventuality. Inspired by the concept of 'Pacifist Preppers'—a group preparing for an imminent future where contemporary standards of technology, economics and energy resources collapse—the bio-dynamic theme of the design is translated into a fashion film highlighting how it can be used post-apocalypse.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING ACCESSORY OF THE WEEK

Whether you're a panicky student cramming for exams or just someone who'd like to be able answer questions outside of the 'Entertainment' category at the weekly pub quiz, this is the accessory for you. Psychologists Robert Reinhart and Professor Geoffrey Woodman at Nashville's Vanderbilt University have developed a piece of headwear that can stimulate the wearer to solve problems faster, using a mild electronic current generated by built-in electrodes. Also known as tDCS (aka transcranial direct current simulation), the charge passes through the skin to the brain and helps focus cognitive activity when carrying out tasks. Interestingly, the team discovered the opposite effect is true when the reverse current was applied to the head, slowing down the wearer and provoking more mistakes.

#MUSTHAVE PHONE ACCESSORY OF THE WEEK

With all the hours you put into using your smartphone, isn’t it time it gave you something back (besides carpal tunnel syndrome)? Created by fitness specialists DesirableBody, a new product called Tonefone allows users to give their arms a workout as they use their device. Available in 1kg or 1.5kg weights, the steel case fits around your iPhone 5/5S to effectively transform it into a dumbbell, and comes coated in protective rubber in case of drops. With those newly ripped biceps the accessory is sure to give you, you'll never have to feel guilty about your borderline-obsessive Facebook stints again.
