Our creator Aaajiao just updated his website to include his latest conceptual art project, inspired by jellyfish, which will launch as an iPad app soon. We spoke with Aaajiao to find out more about his new piece. The Creators Project: Can you explain your new work about jellyfish?
Aaajiao:The jellyfish project is the continuation of a work I did last year for my solo show. I used a computer program to simulate a very special creature, a kind of jellyfish called Turritopsis Nutricula. If you cut it into two pieces, they turn into leeches within 24 hours, and grow antennas after 72 hours. There is no way to stop their growth. With only a single cell [this creature can] start a new life. I understand it as an ultimate life, which will never end. My latest installation and the iPad application are about this creature. Is there sound involved in this work?
Sound is enabled in part of the application, Nara did it.What does this app do and when it will be officially launched?
This app is called Infinite. It is a jellyfish created by an algorithm simulation. You can zoom in on the image with finger movements. It was supposed to be online on the 17th of June, but I had some problems with the verification, the Apple verifier might not understand the app’s functions, I am still trying to resolve this issue with them. You seem interested in subjects like biotechnology, life, and nature. How do you approach the relationship between nature, living beings, and the virtual world?
I’m driving a discussion about the eternal existence of a jellyfish in order to raise the question of what is eternity and what is the eternity of a natural living being. I also am trying to raise the question of what the relationships between the eternal concepts of different dimensions are, and if they are all united in one?
How will digital technology have changed our lives in 20 years?
Life will be easier, it is inevitable that our lives will be all connected. This excites me, but at some point, I might want to escape it.What do you mean our lives will be all connected?
Every movement you make in society will affect others. What is the technology you wish to have most?
Teleportation. What are your current projects? Are there any exciting exhibitions that you can share with us?
I will have a show by the end of June, and another one later in July at the Chinese Art Museum. Recently, I went to Finland for an artist residency program. I did some new work during my stay, most of those works are related to glitch visual experiences that happened during the data transition. I am also showing some work at the Liste 16 in Basel, Switzerland. Is your new work, HAL, on your website one of the works related with “glitch visual experiences”?
It uses datamosh—a kind of algorithm for glitch art. I applied it to Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Wrong visual experiences, for me, are like placebo. There is no truth, and we don’t need one.Image courtesy of Aaajiao
