New York, the city that never sleeps, with a hot dog stand on every corner and buildings going up to the sky, and strange vegetative growths that sprout up around the city. Yeah, that last one you might not be so familiar with because it comes from the imagination of filmmaker Lena Steinkühler in her graduation project New York Biotropes. In the video weird plant life and alien forms start growing amongst the shrubbery, in the subway, on the pavement, anywhere really, making a colorful addition to the city’s gothic towers, art deco stylings, and general urbanity. It might seem surreal, but if AR eyewear takes off then maybe we could all be living in a world like this.Steinkühler explains the concept behind it:My idea was to create a film, that fills up the metropolis New York with vegetation, that adapts to the straightness of the technology and the given situation. This happens through the assimilation of structures and forms. These biotopes are shaped by the existing living environment, but in turn also shape the newly developed living environment by their presence. In other words, a symbiotically coexistence begins.[via Vimeo]@stewart23rd
