Roberta Vinci Charms the Pants off U.S. Open Crowd After Beating Serena

Roberta Vinci beat Serena Williams, ending Serena's run at the calendar slam. She was the best person for the job.

The unseeded Roberta Vinci pulled off a stunning upset of Serena Williams in the U.S. Open semifinal this afternoon and everyone was crushed at the missed opportunity for something historical, but then Vinci stepped to the mic. She was funny, overwhelmed, hilariously modest, and generally just came across like a regular person in an unbelievable situation. There could not have been a better personality to knock off Serena in front of that crowd.

Near the end of her speech, she apologized to the crowd for ruining Serena's run at the calendar slam then said, "but today is my day, sorry guys." To huge applause. She will play fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta in the final, where she will be the crowd favorite.
