Rugby league superstar Jarryd Hayne may have been caught in some rough spots during his attempt at the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers last season - but nothing came close to the awkwardness he experienced at an Australian high school talk on internet security yesterday.

Hayne, who now plays for the Gold Coast Titans NRL team, was speaking to students at Robina State High School on the Gold Coast when the online browsing history on his phone was projected on a screen in front of 200 students.

Amongst the sports images were those from a porn website showing various sex acts and a topless woman.

The screen was turned off almost straight away, but not before laughter rippled hrough the watching students – leaving the Hayne Plane pretty damn embarrassed.

Nick Savvides, the Norton internet security expert at the lecture with Hayne, later told the Australian Associated Press that the images were not from the former NFL player's phone.

Savvides called it a "middle man" attack on Hayne's phone.

"Connecting to open networks, people can see what you're doing and in this case, inject unwanted materials," he told AAP.

Hayne himself was pretty shocked. "It was [ackward]," the ex-49ers running back told AAP.

"I shut my phone straight away so that I was logged off. Wow."

Twitter has already reacted to the incident, expressing doubt on whether Hayne was really hacked or that the porn was on his phone anyway.

Ok, please tell me I'm not the only one who doesn't buy the Hayne 'Porn wasn't on my phone' thing? Who else would have done it?

The entire demonstration had been set up to show the dangers of joining free WiFi networks, where others could use a person's data without their knowledge and gain access to their smartphone or laptop.

Hayne, a former star winger with the Parramatta Eels and New South Wales State of Origin team, signed a mid-season deal with the Titans after his failed attempts at the NFL and making the Fijian Olympic rugby sevens side.
