Frank & Tony Make Random Moments Seem Meaningful

Frank & Tony are an unlikely pair to appear on the Electric Zoo lineup. While most of the acts booked to appear at the festival bring big-room heat with maximalist sounds engineered to hype thousands of people at once, the Brooklyn-based duo comprised of Anthony Collins and Francis Harris often bring subdued vibes that seem more suited to an after party in a smoky lounge than an outdoor blowout. Nevertheless, Collins and Harris will pack up their records and cart them to Randall’s Island later this month to bring sultry vibes to the Sunday School Vinyl Only tent.

“What You Believe,” one of the tracks from their sixth installment of the Frank and Tony Presents…EP series, is an apt example of their moody style. It sounds like it was recorded underwater; a slow machine beat chugs through layers of murky chords and a muffled vocal sample of a deep male voice saying barely-intelligible things like “on a social level, on a people level,” and “what you believe, how you really feel.” The video, which you can peep above, matches the track’s dense atmospherics with grainy footage of random events, like a sparkler burning out, a car in the woods, and some people raking the water at a beach (fishing?). Although the events seem random and meaningless, the tune’s moodiness and the quality of the film seem to imbue the shots with sentimentality.
