Ring the bells! It’s World Emoji Day and today we found out that in 2016 we will 38 brand spankin’ new emoji. No longer will we communicate concepts like selfies, bacon, and “face with cowboy hat” with mere words, thanks to an announcement from the Unicode Consortium.
“These symbols are considered for incorporation into Unicode for reasons such as compatibility usage, popular requests from online communities, and filling the gaps in the existing set of Unicode emoji,” the consortium says. Some choices like “pregnant woman,” “man dancing,” and “avocado,” are 100% necessary.

These new symbols will also become fresh material for emoji-friendly artists like Yung Jake, Carla Gannis, and Albert Omoss, as well as the vibrant community of GIF-makers who bring emoji to life. One of our favorites is Anne Horel, who mixes emoji into famous artworks and turns them into colorful animated collages. Happy World Emoji Day!
