Cole Plante is Winning Summer: A THUMP Q&A

The 17 year old DJ is probably having more fun than you.

Like most teenagers, Cole Plante is savoring every moment of summer. But unlike his peers, Plante has spend his fleeting months of freedom doing things like playing at Disneyland for their Grad Nights parties, appearing on MTV's Wolf Watch to talk about episodes of Teen Wolf, and touring a few choice nightclubs around the country (clubs he's not old enough to enter, mind you). Cole's new single, "Before I'm Yours," drops next week so we caught up with the DJ/producer to see how he's handling the wild ride before his senior year.

THUMP: From the Disney grad nights to Wolf Watch to your own tour… you're kind of winning summer. Are you mentally going to be able to go back to school this fall?
Cole Plante: It's definitely interesting. From touring and being on the show to back-to-school is a big change, but I'm always loving school. I know it's odd for a senior to say that, but this is my final year and it's the most fun, especially enjoying it with friends. After three years of doing it it's normal now for me to be balancing school and my career but it's definitely a give-and-take on both sides.

Wolf Watch lets you reveal your inner fanboy, but also the fact that you have a genuine enthusiasm for something beyond music. For you, what's the best thing about being on the show?
It's so great being able to talk about something I love, especially when it involves the cast of the show as well. We always have fun talking and hanging out, and it's an outlet for my music as well which is great.

What can fans expect to see and hear on this upcoming tour?
I'll be premiering a lot of my brand new music including my new single, "Before I'm Yours," featuring vocals from Brian Logan Dales & Brix, as well as exclusive tracks, remixes and edits. In terms of tempo, there's no barrier for my set. I go with the crowd and take them with me, keeping it fun throughout my set. It's a cool journey.

Your brother is in the fashion world and you frequently credit him with your styling, but even without his help it's clear you have a sense of style on your own. What is it about the Plante brothers that makes you both so creative and expressive?
We were exposed early to all different artists as kids—musicians, fashion forward people, photographers, writers, etc. So, I feel it's this pool of creativity that helped me and my brother adopt these traits and kept us open to anything that helps with inspiration. Plus our parents are pretty hip so they get 10% credit - ha!

The fact that your studio is in your bedroom makes you the ultimate bedroom producer. Now that your productions are getting bigger and you're becoming more successful, do you see yourself outgrowing the at-home setup soon, maybe by the time you finish high school?
Yeah, definitely! Ever since I started DJing, I've been saving money from my gigs for this exact purpose so that one day I could buy a space and make a dedicated studio room, that way I wouldn't have the limitations of neighbors and just have a place free from any distractions. Also one that other artists can come over and vibe in while working on collaborations. I believe it helps the creativity process having a dedicated space. Luckily so much of the music produced nowadays can be done with just a computer and a great imagination, but knowledge of what you're working with is the most important factor I've learned. It's the fiddler vs. fiddle mindset. I've been planning this new space for almost four years now so you'll get first peak of the studio when it happens!
