Young & Sick Revives Telepopmusik's "Breathe"

The multi-talented Nick Van Hofwegen turns the downtempo classic into a feelsy groover

It's been 13 years since french downtempo trio Telepopmusik released Genetic World, featuring the Grammy-nominated track "Breathe." It's a subtle groover of a tune, fit for somewhere between a laid back pool party and some fancy clothes shop I'm too poor to go to, but it's an essential node in the pantheon of poppy downtempo.

Los Angeles based polymath Young & Sick reached deep into his influences when he picked the track to cover. "Breathe was my ignore-the-rain anthem and perfect hangover cure for the years I spent in North London," he tells THUMP. "It feels like a timeless song. Angela McClusky's smokey voice always stole my heart."

Y&S, also known as in-demand graphic artist Nick Van Hofwegen, has breathed new life into the track, bringing deep house and R&B elements along with his silky croon to what was already an undeniable confluence of vibe and melody. Summertime might be nearing an end (does it ever in Los Angeles?), but when those tropical timpani sounds kick in, you'll be zapped back to the early days of June.
