It was announced Wednesday morning that Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and United States President/former reality television star Donald Trump will meet in person for the first time next week. The two world leaders will come together on May 4 aboard the USS Intrepid, a former WWI aircraft carrier, which has been turned into a floating war museum on New York's Hudson river. Both will be there for a commemorative military event hosted by the Australian-American Association. The ABC is reporting a number of Australian WWII veterans will also be in attendance. The meeting will present an opportunity to smooth some things over. Last time Trump and Turnbull talked, their phone call made international headlines: At the time, Trump described it as the "worst" of the phone calls he made to his fellow world leaders in the wake of his inauguration. Reportedly, Trump hung up on Turnbull following heated discussion of the Obama administration's controversial refugee swap deal, which guaranteed the US would resettle refugees from Manus Island. Despite Trump's reservations, that deal is now going ahead. On Twitter earlier this morning, Turnbull expressed that he was "delighted" to travel to the US and meet Trump in May. In a press release, the PM said Australia and the United States are "enduring allies… who share the values of democracy, the rule of law and a commitment to peace, prosperity and security."Turnbull also hinted the meeting would provide opportunity for diplomacy, saying it came at a time "when our region faces a serious threat from a reckless and dangerous regime in North Korea." The PM said he looked forward to discussing this and "many other issues" with President Trump. US Vice President Mike Pence was in Australia last week, where the Veep praised Turnbull for calling on China to exert diplomatic and economic pressure on the North Korean administration. For its part, the White House released a statement saying that Trump "looks forward to meeting the Prime Minister and showcasing the enduring bonds, deep friendship and close alliance the US has with Australia."Can't wait for all the uncomfortable photo ops.Follow Kat on Twitter
