Seven years on from their last LP, 2010's Forgiveness Rock Record, grin-inducing Canadian indie-rock heroes Broken Social Scene have returned. Their new single, "Halfway Home," was released yesterday, and you can listen to it below. It is, inevitably, a clattering, joyful four-and-a-half minutes, like a slow-mo steam train crashing in a major key.

Within hours of the track hitting, a 13-strong troupe of Broken Social Scene members, affiliates, and well-wishers took the track to Colbert. Emily Haines and James Shaw of Metric and Amy Millan and Evan Cranely of Stars were among the throng. It all finished with Kevin Drew saying "Friendship, ladies and gentlemen, friendship" to the crowd as the last chord decayed, which only sounds corny if you haven't just played this song on late-night television and practically forced a pissed off country to beam.

Watch it below and, guys… friendship.
