The brilliant San Francisco-via-Baltimore oddballs M.C Schmidt and Drew Daniel of
are no strangers to conceptual tomfoolery. In the past, they've sampled the sounds of hair being cut and the amplified brainwaves of a crayfish. Now, the two of have announced their newest LP
Ultimate Care II
, a single wash cycle-length composition comprised entirely of samples from the washing machine in their basement: an eponymous Whirlpool model Ultimate Care II. The album even ends with the sound of an alert buzzer to let the listener know the "cycle" is complete.
Released February 19 on Thrill Jockey Records, Ultimate Care II mixes colors from an array of contributors, including sound-wizard Dan Deacon and Half Japanese's Jason Willett. Special dirty and clean laundry colored editions will also be pressed to vinyl and yes, Matmos are planning to perform their Ultimate Care II unit live on tour. More info on that as it surfaces, or cycles, that is.
