Next Hype: Anna Lunoe + Free Download

An elegant DJ spreads bright, fun house sounds across the planet.

Anna Lunoe didn't come out of nowhere. This stone-cold house music fox was huge on the Australian festival DJ circuit and radio before moving to Los Angeles last year to crack the U.S. club scene with her signature style – house music that's smooth and elegant, yet somehow bright and fun at the same time. Anna also makes her own tracks in a similar vein, as well as lending her sweet vocals to jams from Australian best-seller Flume, Wax Motif, Touch Sensitive, Them Jeans, and even more in the pipeline. While she's now sipping smoothies and saying "dude" more than she says "heaps," Anna remains a sunny Sydney girl at heart. Download her AC Slater remix for free below and then read all about animal masks and her troublemaking DJ squad named Hoops.

THUMP: Where are you from?
Anna Lunoe: Sydney, Australia. It's an easygoing place with lots of beaches and expensive food.

How did you get your name?
Born with it! I started with a radio show first, so when I started getting asked to DJ I just played under my name so people who listened to my radio show knew that it was me… then it seemed too late to change it..

What labels do you record for?
Fools Gold, Future Classic, Fjordin and Yes Yes Records

What did the first ever track you made sound like and what was it inspired by?
The first track I actually released was a remix and it was very UK funky sounding, but the first songs I made were strange hip-hop beats and also these kind of mega-mix mashups. It was some sort of puzzle challenge I would do. I guess some people do sudoku, but I would make 10 songs into one. One I made entirely of Missy Elliot samples. I think I put that one up on my Myspace at some point. They are pretty funny. When I'm feeling sad I listen to them to cheer me up.

Who is your best friend that also does music and what are they like?
My best friends all seem to do music. Nina Las Vegas and Bad Ezzy are two girls who I have been DJing with since 2008 or so. We throw hip-hop parties in Sydney. We have made remixes together and have traveled around a lot together. We are going to Dubai next month to play a show, but these days it's pretty hard to get us all in one place. We will always throw parties/DJ together—it's just what we do together for a good time. Keep an eye out for Hoops on the Grandma DJ circuit in 2056.

What's the best environment to hear your music?
I think being barefoot is essential. In Sydney, we used to have have these guerrilla night parties that are on beaches around the city. They were called Clambake. It was always some strange beach that you would find out about that night and would trek out to. They were the best.

What is your favorite sound right now?
Techno elements and gospel vocals. But every four months the sound I play seems to moves one step in a different direction.

Name three non-musical inspirations.
Painted animal head masks. Asian babes in action movies. Mountains.

Who is one up-and-coming artist you think we should look out for?
I think Banks will be big this year.

What's next for you?
Before the end of the year, there will hopefully be a single, followed by an EP, and a bunch of collaborations out… Touring-wise, I'm' hitting Europe in August and October, Australia in December and all around the USA in between then.
