Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject is Ninja Tune man FaltyDL. The Brooklyn based producer, better known to his mum as Drew Lustman, is set to drop a new 12" on the label later this month. "Rich Prick Poor Dick" is exactly the kind of experimental-leaning club jam we've come to expect from a musician capable of traversing everything from near-breakcore to future garage.THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
FaltyDL: If we're gonna be fucking real this was the first song I ever loved. It's kind of creepy watching this video back now. I'd love a VH1 behind the scenes episode on Raffi.What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
Well, I am not really a DJ, I'd say I am about 90% producer and 10% performer. I learned how to DJ because it's what you do when someone tries to book you for a show. I don't really enjoy DJ culture much, that being said my friend Alex Incyde taught me how to mix at his old apartment in Queens back in '09 I think. I mixed these two tracks if I recall.
I have no guilty pleasure songs. Either all pleasures in life are guilty or innocent. Making music is what I do for a living and it is my passion. This question would be like asking a teacher what subject is their guilty pleasure to teach? It's all education, right? Am I embarrassed about any listening habits I have formed over the years? Hell no.What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
Lesley Duncan is such a babe. There are many versions of this floating around, but it's the whistling that just kills me every time. I mix this when I play live as well. People freak out, or get mad — it's hard to tell the difference.Which track of your own do you love the most?
It's usually the last song I completed that I'm feeling the most. I tend to look forward in my production more then look back. That's why I've made four albums in five years. I'm wrapping up the fifth now. "Human Meadow" remains dear to my heart for many reasons, a few of which are that it began a friendship and it also ushered in what felt like my first quality tune. I made a lot of music in late '08 early '09. Great time.What track of your own do you hate the most?
There are a few releases I made in '06-'07 that feel quite amateurish now. Everything is embarrassing in retrospect. Here's one I don't like very much.
Not sure why this never got released, but it's an absolute roller. I email Lady Kier about once a year, and hope to work with her some day.What's your favourite track that you wish worked in a set?
That's a good question. I jam tunes in any way I can if it is what I want to hear next. Sometimes I just cut it right in, sometimes I ride out a horrible dissonant blend for far too long. This one is tough.What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
Ah, something pleasant. I have a hard enough time wrestling with an incredibly vivid dream life (both awake and asleep). I take a lot of the day to bed with me. Be it sniper riffling or producing. The deadly combo of the two is rare, but happens.
