Artists Show Us Their Interpretations of Indonesia (Pt. 2)

We asked artists from Indonesia and abroad to show us what comes to mind when they think of this incredibly varied country. Today we're presenting another five of our favorites, including works by Sanchia, Wedhar Riyadi, and the artist couple Luthfi Putra

The above images are from LEXI LAND, a Bali-based artist. LEXI LAND told us that she "feel a deep pull toward something unknowable, mysterious and all-encompassing," and that she sees the same qualities in some Indonesian art. This image is influenced by the "trance dance, Barong, Legong, masks from all over Indonesia, sculptures and ogoh-ogoh."

"Indonesia is special—there is a magic here, a light and shadow and an incredible harmony between it all," Lexi said.

Wedhar Riyadi is one of the most well-known names in Indonesian art. His style is also one of the most recognizable. He uses cartoonish characters and dark themes to create almost macabre visuals.Wedhar Riyadi

VICE Indonesia's own Iyas Lawrence took inspiration from horror queen Suzanna for his piece. You can see his photography right here on VICE. Iyas Lawrence

Luthfi Putradi and Malinda Hapsari prove that the couple who draws together, stays together. You can see their work on Instagram at @luthfiputradi.Luthfi X Malinda

Sanchia is a Jakarta-based mother whose work shifts between the surreal and the realistic. Check #sanchiadraws on Instagram for her daily doodles. Sanchia
