The National, who are currently beefing with Karl Rove, were the musical guests on Saturday's CBS This Morning. Rather than performing in the network's Manhattan studio, as most artists do on This Morning, the band played four songs at Basilica Hudson, a 1200-capacity venue down the road from The National's studio in upstate New York.The venue itself has a cool history. Built as a foundry to produce railroad car wheels in the 1880s, it was converted into a glue factory that closed in the 1980s. The artist Patrick Doyle took it over soon after and, in 2010, he handed it over to former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur and her boyfriend, Troy Stone. It's been hosting unconventional art exhibitions and concerts ever since.But yes, The National. They played four cuts from their new LP, Sleep Well Beast: "Day I Die," "Nobody Else Will Be There," "Turtleneck," and "The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness." It sounded great. Karl Rove probably would have hated it.
