Welcome to Insult to Injury, the place where the Noisey editors gather weekly to dump a whole bunch of music and talk about life’s four essential Bs: Blunts, Butts, Bros, and Basic bitches. Here’s what we’ve all been listening to.
DJ Q feat. Kai Ryder – “Be Mine”
Ineffable
TL;DR: Disclosure kinda sucks, listen to this instead.

Violens – “Something Falling”
Guys! I’m back. I know you didn’t miss me. Thank you to Dan and Fred for pretending to be me for the past two weeks. You guys did a great job of representing the indie-schmindie wuss in me (Tennis) and the RAGE THAT BURNS IN MY DARK DARK SOUL (Godflesh). Thanks also for calling attention to the fact that I have all the grace of a drunk elephant. FYI Dan—this week I walked into a bed and injured my leg. Also this week: I’ve only been listening to mixtapes my friends have made me. This makes me happy because I thought mixtape-making was a dead art. NOT TRUE. One of the standout tunes from one collection is this old cut by Violens. I’m coming down from all that Coachella silliness and this is the sonic equivalent of floating away into the sunset on a white fluffy cloud.

Blitz – “New Age”I’ve already seen hella punk bands already, but we’re only into day one of NYC’s punk festival New York’s Alright (check out
our interview with Reed Dunlea). Im the lone button-down clad homie in a sea of shoestring headbands, leather jackets with studs, and neck tattoos. Whatever, I like it that way. But if I did want to fit in, all I’d have to do would be head down to the local “punk store” (do those words even fit together?) and get a Discharge shirt. I wish there were more Blitz shirts at the fest though. That band ripped.

Augusta (of Cayetana) – “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up”
I don’t smoke pot and I don’t give a shit about Jesus. This Sunday is completely wasted on me. I’ll probably just sit in my room all day, eating marshmallow Peeps and listening to this song over and over again. …Actually, when I put it like that, I do sound a lot like a stoner. Still think the whole Jesus thing is a scam though. Anyway, this is Augusta from the very amazing band Cayetana and her roommates covering “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” which, sad but true, I just found out was originally a song by Tom Waits, not the Ramones. Stupid me.

Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Ryan Leslie, Lloyd Banks – Christian Dior Denim Flow
Today is Good Friday, and since I’m a fan of rap music, I can no longer accept this holiday as being anything other than a tribute to Kanye West. So, as we celebrate the fact that Yeezus died for our sins by taking a day off work, eating chocolate, and competing to see who can skin a live rabbit the fastest (it’s a Canadian thing), it’s important to keep the holy hymns in mind. “Christian Dior Denim Flow” is a great song because not only did it come out on one of the G.O.O.D. Friday’s, but it also has the word “Christian” right in it! So enjoy your day, and don’t forget that I accept tithe payments via PayPal this year.

St. Vincent – “Rattlesnake”St. Vincent is the most interesting rock artist working right now, and if you’re not paying attention, you’re missing out on the process of her going from beloved indie star to musical icon. Look at her shred here, calm as can be. And then look at her flip out as she plays all the way up the neck of the guitar with the palm of her hand. That shit is dope. At a time when big rock acts seem to be mostly interesting in reviving something or other, St. Vincent makes rock that sounds completely modern but still smart (i.e. its version of modernity is glitchy electronic effects and distortion instead of a DJ plunked down on stage for some reason). And “Rattlesnake” is perfect for walking around and feeling like you’re the only one in the only world, which is what I’m always trying to accomplish. Except usually I get pulled out of my reverie because I kicked a rat by accident, not because I ran across a rattlesnake.
