SHARP INTAKE OF BREATH AS RIOTERS CITE "INJUSTICE" AND "ANGER" AS REASONS FOR SUMMER RIOTS
Reading the Riots study interviewed rioters who rioted in the riots(via)
270 people who fought police in the street and looted shops in August were interviewed for a study called Reading the Riots. They said they did what they did because they couldn't get jobs and were treated unfairly by society. A lot of people, many of whom took part in riots outside of London, also cited the police shooting of Mark Duggan as motivation for their actions. The report, carried out by The Guardian and the London School of Economics, also found that some rioters wanted to take advantage of "a perceived suspension of normal rules" to "acquire free stuff". While David Cameron was quick to blame "gang culture" in the initial aftermath of the trouble, the study found that gangs weren't really to blame for what happened. Which, I guess, ties into the idea that this was a mass outbreak of individual opportunism and the flaring of private frustrations. What else happened this weekend when you were unconscious and insensible? Find out on page two. US
SOMEONE SENT ME THIS, I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S TRUE
I think America is allowed to assassinate its own people now?
(via)
Apparently a bill was passed in America this weekend that allows the US government to assassinate its own people in the street. Some commentators have remarked that the US is learning from the problems that regimes are facing in the Middle East. Regimes like Bashar al-Assad's in Syria, which has run into problems with the international community after killing loads of Syrian people who want Assad's regime to finish now. Maybe the Americans are expecting Spring Break to look a little different next year? IDK. UK
CHINA RULES THE WORLD NOW
Panda bears arrive in Scotland, signalling rejig of world power league(via)
Two panda bears got off a plane in Scotland on Sunday. Pandas haven't been in the UK for a long time. That's about it, as far as I can tell, though perhaps the key lines in this story are the ones that talk about "the UK's burgeoning political and economic relationship with China". Are you toadying to new global superpowers again, British government? Yes, I think that you probably are.The pandas definitely represent our impotence on the world stage. HOW SYMBOLIC. UK
JEREMY CLARKSON PUT THE BOOT INTO THOSE DAMN SUICIDAL PEOPLE
He gets annoyed when they make his train late
(via)
If there's one thing you can say about Clarkson, it's that he tells it how it is. How it is to be a prick. One of three strange men who present a programme for strange men about cars, Jezzer said that people who choose to end their lives in the wheels of fast-moving trains are "selfish" and that their bodies should be left scattered around the tracks as carrion for wildlife. "The train cannot be removed nor the line re-opened until all of the victim's body has been recovered," he explained in his column for The Sun. "And sometimes the head can be half a mile away from the feet. Change the driver, pick up the big bits of what's left of the victim, get the train moving as quickly as possible and let foxy woxy and the birds nibble away at the smaller, gooey parts that are far away or hard to find." If you've ever lost anyone close to you because of suicide, I'm sure you'll understand what Clarkson's getting at. He's just saying what we're all thinking, though he has been condemned by a few mental health charities. Maybe more surprising is the fact that, after years of deriding public transport, his tacit admission that he does occasionally catch trains hasn't been met with scorn from all the people who like him because he prefers cars. Seriously, check out his account. What a guy.
