There are no street names to speak of in CP, which obviously makes it impossible for people to have regular addresses. So, instead of saying, “I live at 11 Green St”, you say “I live at the tyre with the smiley face on it three miles west of the centre of town”. That is your address.
This concrete UFO was actually built in the 70s as a waiting room to an underground brothel below. This was back in the days when guys outnumbered girls 400 to one. It’s more like 40 to one now so we figured they still might want to keep it open but if there are still working ladies in town, they’re not working here.
Hanging out on the main street.
Everyone who lives in Coober Pedy seems to own at least eight of these.
This is the local drive in where they show a film every fortnight. The next film scheduled is called
and it was shot in Coober Pedy with Vince Colosimo and Jacqueline McKenzie. It’s kind of too bad if you are into good films and live in this town.
This is one of the props from another film that was shot here called
. In fact there’s remnants from the film all over the place.
The underground Serbian church.
This is the underground lounge room of a couple we met in a part of CP called Potch Gully. Potch is the colourless opal that the houses are dug out of. The places here are fancier than most so locals refer to it as Posh Gully.
Down in a massive working mine.
Sunday morning at the local shooting range.
