Jake Chapman has just made his first ever music promo video, filming cameras throwing themselves off tower blocks just off Columbia Road while Spiritualized play "You Lie You Cheat". We love it! Read an interview with him about it here.Vice: Hello. How did this come about?
Jake Chapman: I had a few conversations with Jason about it. He threw up the opportunity to infiltrate his thinking and for him infiltrate mine. Are you two pals?
Yeah I’ve known him for a while but always kept a respectful distance. What happens in the video?
It’s a camera wobbling around like it’s on nitrous oxide or amyl nitrate or whichever is your favourite, and it gets thrown out of a tower block. We did it around Columbia Road. We destroyed a few cameras.Where they expensive ones? How much did it cost?
Ha. I’m the creative so I don’t have to get into such things as money. How come you decided to make your first music video with Spiritualized?
I’ve been offered some before but I didn’t like the bands.Who were they?
I couldn’t tell you. Well I could but it’d be…well there’s bands that you just think "Oh God" cos on an expedient level you can’t deliver an idea like throwing cameras out of windows to Kylie Minogue because they’d just think you were a fucking idiot. So you did this because of you’re a big Spiritualized fan?
Yeah. Jason’s really good. I’m such a fan of his music that I even visited him in hospital when he was ill. I took him grapes. When he was in a coma. I would throw grapes at him.To try and wake him up?
No, I was trying to coerce him into commissioning me to make a video. As he was in a coma I would sit whispering into his ear things like "Chapman. Good. Make video. Good Chapman. He make good video."And it paid off.
It did indeed.INTERVIEW BY ANDY CAPPER
