The New York Jets are the two-day-old leftovers from a shit sandwich that somehow has not been thrown out, despite being A) old and B) made entirely out of shit. Yesterday, Geno Smith replaced Ryan Fitzpatrick as starting quarterback because Fitzy looked godawful through the first six weeks of the season. Then Geno went down with an injury, causing a uniquely Jets-branded question of despair: What if Geno Smith can’t come back in?

Geno Smith did not come back in and the Jets Quarterback of Record, Joe Namath, had something to say about that:

Namath is no stranger to knee injuries, and he is also an old football dude, so he’s already predisposed to this kind of thinking. Plus, he is basically the only thing Jets fans have to feel good about in their rotten lives, so he probably knows he can get away with a lot. Still, this is a rough look, and word trickled back to Geno who, for what it’s worth, tried to get back in the game (and was extremely gracious about Namath calling him out).

It’s a good thing Smith didn’t get back in the game, though, because the Jets just announced this afternoon that an MRI revealed he had a torn ACL and he’s likely done for the season. Namath looks pretty silly now, but that is pretty much par for the course with Jets figureheads.
