Johny Hendricks Hospitalized After Failed Weight Cut, Out of UFC 192

The co-main event bout of this weekend’s UFC 192 has been cancelled, according to Dana White.

Ariel Helwani first reported that while cutting weight for the weigh-ins, which would have been later today, Johny Hendricks was hospitalized for a kidney stone and blockage of his kidneys.

The act of cutting weight to make certain weight classes in the sport is a hot topic. The UFC’s official drug-testing company, the USADA, stirred up controversy recently by calling a stop to all post-weight-cut IVs. Using IVs to rehydrate has become a common practice—a clean way to combat severe dehydration in the shortest amount of time.

The various health risks of weight cutting, and the subsequent cancelled bouts, are becoming a real problem in MMA, and surely Hendricks’ case will force the UFC to take a hard look at the rules of the game.
